The Modernist unveils 47 masterpieces to the public for the very first time. This comprehensive assemblage of artworks created from the 1970s to the early millennium not only signifies the nascence of modern Malaysian art, but also the vision of the discerning eye. The acquisition of these museum-quality pieces were passionately made with the intention of building a golden collection that speaks for and of a developing nation from an art connoisseur’s perspective.
As one of the pioneering art collections in Malaysia, The Modernist spans a range of periods, schools and movements (Abstract Expressionism, Islamic Revivalism, Realism) as well as medium (from batik painting, watercolour to oil on canvas) assembled over the course of four decades. It is anchored by several pivotal works of vital historical value that respond to the racial riots of 1969, National Cultural Congress in 1971 and the phenomenon of global Islamic Revivalism of the 1980s.
